Home Page Articles Choosing a Host Provider
Managing a Web site comes with two major tasks; Design and Hosting. This article gives you some tips and advice on choosing the right combination of contractors and services.
1. It's usually best to stay with big providers like yahoo.com unless
you want personal service then a small-to-medium provider might be
better.
2. Some of the bigger providers have their own administration
interfaces but most use a 3rd party tool. You can look for
drag-and-drop design tools for basic sites or a complete template if
you want a professional look. We chose Joomla as our administration
tool because of it's good design team, extensibility and ease of
customization for a particular purpose.
3. If you have a site designed by a designer then I wouldn't advise
paying more then $500-1000 for a basic design and $2000 for an
ecommerce site with user manager like ours uses.
4. Most designers will charge a fee to do updates like content changes
and adding pages. I wouldn't advise paying more than $50 per incident.
You'll find that's the average, some will charge more and others less.
It's a matter of finding the right person you can trust. Guru.com and
Craigslist.com have the most designers I've found at reasonable rates.
5. For our existing clients, if you decide to take your new site then
some technologies your new hosting provider will need to support are:
PHP 4.3+ scripting language
MySQL 3.23+
Linux Operating System
.htaccess files
Control Panel to manage statistics, email accounts, file manager, backup/restore (optional).
Email features like spam control, forwarding, auto-responder, aliases and email lists.
6. There is a Web site of designers who specialize in Joomla called www.joomlancers.com
. I don't know about the quality of designers but many are located in
Europe and Australia and I've found they have a different view of how a
Web site should look and operate than those in the States. It's
advisable to check-out sites they've worked on.
