Domain Management
It would be great if domains were just registered and that was it but there's more to it than that. If you intend on managing your own domain it is crucial that you become educated in the domain management process as much as possible.

I've been managing hundreds of domains for about 7 years so I have some experience in this area.

It only takes one mistake or missed payment to have a nightmare situation arise. I've had several clients and read about dozens of others through the WIPO rulings (the legal entity in charge of managing disputes between parties trying to recover a domain name)  who decided to take control of their domain.

Unfortunately through lack of knowledge and attention these good folks lost their domains to domain "Snappers" (companies, typically in Asia, that monitor expiring domains and within seconds of it becoming available they register it) and it was a huge task to get them back, one children's author never got it back and it ended up being an adult content site based in Asia.

Here's some tips:

  • Use domain locking and auto-renewal.

  • Keep at least one valid credit card on file at the registrar, preferrably two or three.

  • By default all contact information associated with a domain is public information so I'd recommend using a mailing and email address you don't mind getting a lot of additional SPAM sent to as there are a couple hundred email miners (people who scour the domain registration records) that will try to contact you. Alternatively you can set the domain to private or use a proxy service (which is essentially what we act as). Both typically cost an extra fee through your domain registrar.

  • Periodically update the domain records to refresh the change date (to show you are actively tracking the domain) and contact email address to help foil the SPAMmers.
